Sure, this is a site about home security cameras, but I was so impressed with the Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat that I wanted to write a review about it.
It’s great for home surveillance as it allows me to monitor the climate in my home. Many of the best home security cameras lack the ability to monitor the temperature. In fact, the only one that monitors the climate accurately is the Canary Home Security System.
The Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat is easy to install and has completely surpassed my expectations in reliability and functionality. Let’s look at what’s so great about this product.
You can access the Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with your Apple iOS or Android smartphone. You can also access the Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat using their web portal.
The Honeywell RTH9580WF must be setup through the web portal. That’s the only place where the MAC and an additional code can be entered. The web portal is also the only place where thresholds are established for alerts. You can receive alerts for a variety of conditions including temperature, humidity and WiFi status.
However, you will be spending most of your climate monitoring life on your phone, so be sure to download the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app to your phone. Open the app, enter the userid and password setup on the web portal and up comes the thermostat.
You can adjust the temperature, turn heat or air conditioning on or off, set a schedule and set the fan to on, off or auto. All from the comfort of your smartphone.
Unlike a lot of other WiFi thermostats, this one will automatically reconnect after a cable modem or wireless router resets itself. I tested it and it was seamless. No need to reset the thermostat when there is an internet outage.
A photo of my Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat accompanies this article. The thermostat is remarkably small. It is 4.5 inches wide by 3.25 inches high. I had to use a back plate which wasn’t supplied to cover the unpainted area where my old thermostat.
Installing this thermostat to control my air conditioning and heat was simple. It’s the same process used with a non WiFi thermostat.
There are detailed installation instructions which should be followed. It’s not hard but if you feel uncomfortable doing this sort of activity, call in an HVAC person to do it. They do these sorts of installations all the time. This is one of the most popular brands of thermostat so any seasoned HVAC person should be familiar with it.
Some thermostats run with a battery. This does not. It’s important that you have access to the common wire also known as the C wire. That’s what powers the thermostat.
The Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat connects via 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz frequency.
The Honeywell RTH9580WF has standard mounting holes at the back of the device. Depending upon your old thermostat, you may need to make new holes in the wall which are hidden by the newly installed device.
Fun and Different
You can change the background color to match the wall color. Default isn’t likely to match your wall. There are a variety of pre-programmed color schemes. I used the custom option to pick out a shade of brown that matched the wall where it’s mounted.
The Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat is a great device that allows me to control the temperature of my home from the couch or out of state. The integrated temperature alerts allow me to find out when there’s a potential issue with my air conditioning or heat even when not at home.
Very highly recommended. Glad I purchased this one.
Manufacturer Link: Honeywell
All of these articles are written by someone (me) that figured out how to do this stuff the hard way. I have owned and tested dozens of cameras. Manufacturer support varies. There are a few good companies that provide timely answers when you have questions. There are several that sell you the camera and seem to have little interest in post sales support (which leads me to finding out stuff the hard way).
