Wemo was one of our consistent go-to recommendations for smart plugs and switches. Belkin was an early innovator in home automation — no hub required, reliable app, solid build quality. Sadly, those days are over.
It’s really a shame as we recommended them as far back as 2016 with an article called where we discussed integrating Nest Cams with a Wemo. That’s a really long time ago and Nest Cams are a thing of the past so it’s probably no surprise that Wemo is being retired too. Nothing is supported forever. Cameras, smart switches, phones. It happens to a lot of technology.
Belkin has ended technical support for most older Wemo products, and the Wemo app is no longer supported. That means remote access, voice assistant integrations, and cloud-based features have stopped working for the vast majority of Wemo devices. If your smart home relied on Wemo, you’re now looking at expensive paperweights.
Exception: A small number of Wemo devices using Thread or HomeKit integration continue to work. These include the Wemo Smart Light Switch with Thread, the Wemo Stage Smart Scene Controller, and the Wemo Smart Plug with Thread. If you have one of these, you’re safe for now.
Why Did Wemo Die?
Wemo’s decline was years in the making. Reliability issues plagued the product line, and competition from cheaper, more dependable alternatives steadily eroded Belkin’s market share. The company also stepped away from Matter — the new universal smart home standard — which left Wemo isolated from the direction the industry was heading.
The result: a product line that fell behind, a frustrated customer base, and ultimately a shutdown. It’s a familiar cautionary tale in the smart home space — cloud-dependent devices live and die by the decisions of a single company.
🔗 What is Matter, and why does it matter?
Matter is an open-source smart home protocol backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and hundreds of device makers. It lets devices from different brands communicate regardless of which platform you use. When you buy a Matter-certified device, you’re not locked into any one company’s ecosystem. Going forward, look for Matter support on anything you buy — it’s the best insurance against the next Wemo situation.

What About My Existing Wemo Devices?
If your Wemo devices are already dead — no app, no remote access — your options are limited. Most non-Thread Wemo plugs and switches are now effectively non-functional. Local control hacks exist, but that’s not practical for most people.
Our advice: Replace the devices that matter most to your daily routine first — anything used for scheduling, security lighting, or regular automation. Anything being used as a basic manual switch is lower priority.
Heads up on warranty: Belkin stated that customers with Wemo products still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 may be eligible for a partial refund. Worth checking before you throw anything out.
Lessons Learned
The Wemo shutdown is a reminder of a fundamental truth about smart home devices: if it requires a cloud service to function, it can be taken away from you at any time. This has happened with Nest thermostats, Wink hubs, and now Wemo. Going forward, prioritize devices that support Matter, come from large established companies, and can operate locally where possible.
Sorry Wemo. Time to Move On.
The Kasa line from TP-Link is our top recommendation for most former Wemo users. Affordable, reliable, widely compatible, and Matter-certified models are available to future-proof your setup. If you’re an Alexa-only household, Amazon Basics will save you money. Either way — don’t wait.
