Every TP-Link Tapo camera has a status LED on the front that glows green when the camera is connected. It is useful at setup but unnecessary once the camera is installed and confirmed working. Tapo makes it easy to turn off — two taps from the device settings page in the app. Here is exactly how.
How to Turn Off the Status LED on Any Tapo Camera
The steps are consistent across all current Tapo camera models including the C210, C216, C425, C660, and others:
Step 1. Open the Tapo app and tap the camera you want to adjust.
Step 2. From the live view, tap the Settings gear icon.
Step 3. On the Device Settings page, scroll down to find Status LED.
Step 4. Toggle the Status LED switch off.
The change takes effect immediately. No restart required. The camera continues recording, detecting motion, and sending alerts normally with the LED disabled.
Note: The Status LED toggle only affects the indicator light on the front of the camera. It does not affect the infrared LEDs used for night vision — those are controlled separately under Night Mode settings.
Turning Off the Night Vision IR LEDs
If the goal is to eliminate all visible light from the camera — for window-facing installations where IR reflection causes glare, or for stealth placement — the status LED and the IR LEDs are separate controls. The status LED toggle handles the green indicator light. To turn off the IR LEDs used for night vision, switch the camera to Day Mode from the live view screen. Note that Day Mode disables night vision entirely, so the camera will not see in the dark with IR off.
Some newer Tapo models support a 940nm IR mode that is invisible to the naked eye — check your specific camera’s specifications to see if this option is available. If supported, switching to 940nm IR provides night vision without the visible red glow that standard 850nm IR produces.
What the LED Colors Mean on Tapo Cameras
- Solid green — connected to Wi-Fi and TP-Link cloud normally
- Flashing green/red alternating — in setup mode, waiting for configuration
- Slow flashing red — trying to connect to Wi-Fi
- Flashing orange — connected to Wi-Fi but not to cloud
- Fast flashing red — resetting to factory defaults
- Fast flashing green — firmware update in progress
As with Wyze cameras, it is worth re-enabling the status LED temporarily if the camera ever goes offline or behaves unexpectedly — the LED color provides a quick diagnosis before opening the app.
Bottom Line
Open the Tapo app, go to the camera’s Device Settings, find Status LED, and toggle it off. Works on every current Tapo camera model. The IR night vision LEDs are a separate setting — use Day Mode to disable those if needed for window-facing installations.
