The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is the third iteration of the company’s pan and tilt models. When it comes to pan and tilt, this is the best you can currently get for this low of a price.
We’ve looked at the original Wyze Cam Pan, way back in 2018. We called it a bargain back then and it was. Now here we are five years later and this upgraded model has included features that nobody thought was possible back then and especially not at this price.
Let’s take a closer look at what this camera can do.
Software
You can access the Wyze Cam Pan v3 through an iOS or Android device. The video can also be accessed via a browser.
Like all cameras, the included documentation is sparse but not to worry because all the setup is done through the application. Setup for this model is no different from others. Just hit the plus sign and walk through the dialogue to add the camera. Make sure to select the proper model, this is the v3, not the v2 or v1.
Motion and sound alerts can be activated within the app as well as sensitivity settings. The settings are very precise and span from 1 to 100. The camera also has motion tagging so you can see what set it off.
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 offers Detection Zones. These are really handy for eliminating motion from areas that cause false alerts. Think about tree branches blowing in the wind – don’t want alerts from a tree branch.
Smart Detection is available to permit selection of what you want to be alerted on. Software intelligence differentiates from a pet, human or even a package. It’s usually accurate too but not 100 percent.
Now here is where it gets a little tricky because Smart Detection is somewhat limited unless you pay for a subscription. While we aren’t fans of buying a camera then having to pay an annual fee to unlock the full capabilities, it’s where practically all manufacturers are taking their product line.
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 accommodates recording to an onboard micro SD card but cloud recording will require a paid subscription. We think it’s worth the extra amount, but like we mentioned, we’re not happy about it. Incidentally, you can consider the Wyze branded micro SD card to ensure compatibility if you so desire.
These are compatible with IFTTT, Google Assistant and Alexa.
Hardware
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is a uniquely designed camera. The best way to describe it is if you took two cubes about the size of a basic Wyze Cam v3 on top of each other, you would have a Wyze Cam Pan v3.
Unlike prior versions this version spins 360 degrees! It also tilts 180 degrees! That’s impressive.
Using the app, you can set waypoints, do a complete pan and even track the motion which is a neat feature allowing the camera to move along with the object it sees.
These are completely wireless utilizing a pair of internal rechargeable batteries. Wyze states these batteries should last 3-6 months. A battery strength meter is built into the app. The camera must be out of service when it’s time to recharge it requiring the included micro USB cable plugged into a USB adapter.
There is a status light that can be toggled on or off from the app.
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is rated IP65 and has a supported temperature range of -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. It can be used indoors or outdoors. IP65 means it’s rated for outdoor use and it’s ok to get it wet.
Audio is fully supported. Tap the microphone in the Wyze app to have a two-way conversation. Audio quality is a bit tinny but acceptible.
A 120 degree field of view is a step above prior models. We suggest placing it in a corner if indoors to get the entire room.
The 1080p (1920 x 1080) lens renders video at 20 frames per second during the day. The camera will record at 15 frames per second at night.
The daytime image is extraordinarily clear. Very clear night vision is provided with enhanced night vision. We get acceptable night vision at up to 25 feet.
There is a Micro SD slot on the camera and base station. While practically any micro SD card will suffice, Wyze offers their own brand if you like 100% OEM.
Connectivity
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 supports WiFi connectivity via 802.11 b/g/n. Like most cameras in this price range, you must connect to a 2.4 Ghz network as 5.0 is not supported.
Mounts
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 includes a basic wall mount which is ok.
Most camera manufacturers have embraced the 1/4″ – 20 threaded screw hole that is common to a tripod and fortunately, Wyze continues the tradition on this camera too. Fun and Different
Under alarm settings, the Wyze Cam Pan v3 will detect the standard T3 and T4 alarm sounds from smoke and CO detectors, triggering a 12-second alert video and will send a push notification on your phone.
Summary
The Wyze Cam Pan v3 is a well priced camera with a lot of features. You get a lot of high end features for the price. As we mentioned a few times, we recommend consideration of a Cam Plus subscription to unlock capabilities and cloud recording beyond the basics.
