The TP-Link Tapo C660 KIT is a solar-powered outdoor pan/tilt camera that covers a lot of ground — literally and figuratively. Four-K video, 360° AI motion tracking, a 10,000mAh battery kept topped off by a solar panel, and free person, vehicle, and pet detection out of the box. No subscription required, no hub needed, and local microSD storage handles everything without any recurring cost. For a wire-free outdoor camera this capable, it rates extremely well. The Tapo C660 KIT is available on Amazon.

Setup and App

Setup through the Tapo app is straightforward — pair the camera via QR code, connect to Wi-Fi, done. The Tapo app is one of the cleaner experiences in the home security camera space. The interface is well-organized, the detection settings are accessible without digging through nested menus, and the live view loads quickly. Configuring detection zones, setting up preset patrol positions, and adjusting the motion tracking behavior all take a few minutes and work reliably. The camera supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band Wi-Fi, which is a notable advantage over budget competitors that are 2.4 GHz only and the 5 GHz connection is noticeably more responsive for live view and pan/tilt control.  It’s nice to see manufacturers finally support the 5 GHz band. Alexa and Google Assistant integration is supported for voice control and smart display viewing. The Tapo app also integrates with Samsung SmartThings for broader smart home automation.

Video Quality

The 4K (3840×2160) resolution at 15 frames per second is the standout feature — and it genuinely makes a difference at this use case. A pan/tilt camera that tracks subjects across a large outdoor area benefits from 4K because the subject is often not filling the entire frame. At 4K, faces and license plates remain identifiable even when the subject is at significant distance within the field of view. This is where 1080p outdoor cameras often fall short for identification purposes. Color night vision is supported and performs well when the built-in spotlight activates on motion. Without the spotlight, the camera falls back to infrared night vision, which produces clean black-and-white footage. The spotlight-driven color night vision is considerably more useful for identifying subjects — worth keeping enabled in most outdoor applications.

Motion Tracking

This is where the C660 genuinely stands out. The AI motion tracking is fast, accurate, and smooth. When a person or vehicle enters the frame, the camera identifies the subject and follows it continuously as it moves — panning and tilting to keep it centered in the shot. The tracking handles people walking across a driveway, vehicles turning into a yard, and even pets moving at close range without losing the subject or jerking the camera erratically. The 326° pan range means very little of the surrounding area is actually beyond the camera’s reach, and the AI correctly distinguishes people from vehicles from pets with high accuracy — minimizing false alerts from irrelevant movement. The 24/7 Continuous Capture mode is a notable addition — the camera takes images at regular intervals and uses AI to analyze them for motion that standard event-based sensors would miss. This catches gradual movement, distant activity, or objects that enter the frame slowly without triggering the motion sensor. It is one of the more useful battery camera features available and works without requiring a wired power connection.

Solar Power and Battery

The included Tapo A201 solar panel keeps the 10,000mAh battery continuously charged. Tapo rates 45 minutes of direct daily sunlight as sufficient to power the camera through a full day’s operation. In practice, any outdoor south-facing or west-facing wall in a climate with regular sun exposure keeps the battery at or near full without manual intervention. The solar panel and camera mount on the same bracket for a clean single-unit installation, or the panel can be separated on the included 4-meter extension cable to optimize its sun angle independently of the camera position. The 10,000mAh battery provides backup power during cloudy periods or winter months with reduced sun. In prolonged low-light conditions the camera continues operating without manual charging in most circumstances. For locations where ongoing solar charging is limited, the camera charges via USB as well.

Storage

No subscription is required for full camera functionality. A microSD card (up to 512GB, sold separately) handles local storage with no ongoing cost — motion events and continuous capture footage save directly to the card and are accessible via the Tapo app timeline. A 512GB card stores approximately 379 hours of 4K footage, which provides ample retention for most households. Tapo Care cloud subscriptions are available if remote cloud backup or 30-day video history is needed, but for most users the microSD setup is completely sufficient.

Hardware and Installation

The C660 mounts to any flat exterior wall surface — vinyl siding, stucco, wood — using the included bracket and hardware. The solar panel attaches directly above the camera on the same bracket for a tidy single-mount install. Installation takes about 20 minutes. The IP65 weatherproof rating covers rain, dust, and temperatures from approximately -4 to 140°F. Two-way audio is supported via the built-in microphone and speaker. The built-in alarm (loud enough to deter) can trigger on detected motion types or be activated manually from the app. One practical note on placement: the camera’s tilt is designed to pan downward from horizontal, not upward. Installing it too high on a wall limits how far down it can look. Eight to ten feet above ground is the practical sweet spot for most residential placements.

How It Compares

The C660 KIT sits above the Tapo C615F KIT in the Tapo lineup — the C615F adds a floodlight but tops out at 2K resolution, while the C660 delivers 4K and more capable motion tracking. For wire-free battery cameras without pan/tilt, the Wyze Battery Cam Pro is the closest budget alternative, though it lacks solar and 360° coverage. The C660 KIT is the stronger option whenever placement flexibility and 4K tracking matter.

Verdict — 4.5 / 5

The Tapo C660 KIT is one of the best wire-free outdoor cameras available at its price. Solar power eliminates the maintenance burden that makes most battery cameras frustrating over time. The 4K resolution with 360° AI motion tracking is a genuinely capable combination — this camera follows subjects accurately, captures identifiable detail, and does it without a subscription or a hub. The Tapo app is a pleasure to use. The only real limitations are the 15fps recording rate at 4K and the tilt range, which requires thoughtful placement. For most outdoor locations, neither is a meaningful constraint.

Storage tip

A microSD card enables local recording with no subscription needed. The Lexar E-Series 128GB 2-Pack works well for event-based recording and includes two cards.

All of these articles are written by someone (me) that figured out how to do this stuff the hard way. I have owned and tested dozens of cameras. Manufacturer support varies. There are a few good companies that provide timely answers when you have questions. There are several that sell you the camera and seem to have little interest in post sales support (which leads me to finding out stuff the hard way).
